CHARLES PERKINS
Leader of the 1965 Freedom Rides in New South Wales, later the first Aboriginal permanent head of a Commonwealth department - the Department of Aboriginal Affairs.

It’s significant to note that after 20,000 years of inhabiting this continent, this country, this great country, that the Aboriginal people do not own by right any, not one square inch of land in this country. It’s all been taken over by the white man who came here 185 years ago.

Speaking in 1967, used in The Way We Really Were, ABC Documentary Unit, broadcast 24 January 1990.
