In Australia there are common rights which have associated responsibilities. For example, all adult citizens have the right to vote and the responsibility to vote.

Other common responsibilities shared by all Australian citizens include:

• understanding and obeying Australian laws
• serving on a jury, if called on
• allow other Australians to enjoy their rights and freedoms
• appreciating and helping to preserve Australia’s multicultural heritage and community

What makes it hot?

Some people think you only have rights if you accept and perform the associated responsibilities. Other people believe that everyone has rights whether or not they choose to act on the responsibilities associated with these rights.
